This week, Miami-Dade County Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez appeared before the Commission on Disability Issues to discuss the office’s ongoing efforts to protect fairness, access, and accountability for residents with disabilities.

During the presentation, Fernandez explained why safeguarding disabled parking permits is a priority for the Tax Collector’s Office and outlined the steps being taken to address misuse and fraud. He emphasized that disabled parking programs exist to serve residents who genuinely depend on them, and that abuse of the system directly harms those individuals.

As part of this effort, the Tax Collector’s Office is enforcing a zero-tolerance approach to fraud, supported by a countywide audit of disabled parking permits. The goal is to ensure permits are issued and used lawfully, preserving access for residents with legitimate medical needs while restoring confidence in the system.

Fernandez underscored that enforcement is not about punishment, but about responsibility. When fraud goes unchecked, it undermines public trust and weakens services designed to protect vulnerable communities. By enforcing the law consistently, the office aims to strengthen the integrity of the program and ensure it functions as intended.

The discussion reinforced the Tax Collector’s broader commitment to making sure government services work for the people they are meant to serve. Protecting disabled parking permits, Fernandez noted, is ultimately about dignity, fairness, and respect for residents with disabilities across Miami-Dade County.

The Tax Collector’s Office will continue working with county partners and advisory bodies to improve oversight, promote compliance, and ensure that access remains available to those who truly need it.
