Local Business Tax Receipt

The Tax Collector's Office handles local business tax receipts, which are required for businesses in Miami-Dade County. Applications, renewals, and updates should be completed online using BTExpress.

Local Business Tax Receipt Information

We encourage taxpayers to apply for or renew a Local Business Tax Receipt, or request a change to an existing Business Tax account, using BTExpress.

Miami-Dade County requires a local business tax receipt for each place of business and for each separate local business tax classification at the same location. A municipality may also require its own local business tax receipt.

Local business tax receipts are valid for one year. The tax year begins on October 1 and ends on September 30. Businesses located within a municipality must obtain both a city receipt and a Miami-Dade County receipt.

Receipts not renewed by September 30 become delinquent and may be subject to penalties.

  • A 10% penalty is added in October.
  • An additional 5% penalty is added for each month of delinquency after October.
  • The total penalty cannot exceed 25% of the Local Business Tax.
  • Under Florida Statute 205.053(3), an additional penalty of up to $250.00 may apply if the tax remains unpaid for 150 days after the initial notice of tax due.

Renewal applications mailed by Miami-Dade County are courtesy reminders. The receipt holder is responsible for renewing the receipt before the expiration date to avoid penalties, in accordance with Section 8A-175.

Once issued, the local business tax receipt must be displayed prominently at the place of business, in clear view of the public, and must be available for inspection by Miami-Dade County.

Receipts may be transferred when there is a change of ownership, business location, or trade name.

Before starting the application process, review your  business tax category to see if you have additional requirements or are eligible for an exemption.

New applicants must use the online application system or fill out and print the Local Business Tax receipt application and submit it by mail or in person.
