Statement From Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez: Modernization And Implementation Of HB 991 Including Legal Status On Driver Licenses And Identification Cards
Today, I highlighted the importance of implementing and preparing for the changes established under House Bill 991, a comprehensive measure that strengthens verification processes, enhances data coordination, and modernizes how identification and eligibility are handled across Florida.
This legislation introduces significant updates, including enhanced verification of citizenship status, closer coordination between the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles and election systems, and the requirement that Florida driver licenses and identification cards reflect the legal citizenship status of the individual directly on the card.
As Miami-Dade County Tax Collector, my office is at the center of many of these processes because we handle driver licenses and identification services for our residents. This is about modernization, security, and ensuring that our systems reflect accurate and verified information at all times.
Under this framework, driver licenses and identification cards will play an even more critical role in verifying identity and legal status, reinforcing the need for strong, efficient, and well-coordinated systems across agencies. The inclusion of legal status on identification marks a significant step toward greater transparency and accountability in government records.
My office is proactively evaluating how these changes will be implemented locally to ensure a smooth transition for residents while maintaining the highest level of service.
These updates also create an opportunity to further modernize services and improve the customer experience. We are not waiting for change to happen. We are preparing, adapting, and leading. Our responsibility is to ensure that these updates are implemented in a way that is efficient, respectful, and focused on serving the residents of Miami-Dade County. Our goal is to make sure every resident is served efficiently, every record is accurate, and every process reflects the highest standards of accountability.
As part of this effort, we will continue to explore enhancements in digital verification, real-time data coordination, and streamlined service delivery, ensuring Miami-Dade County remains at the forefront of innovation and public service.
This initiative aligns with our mission to modernize government, reduce bureaucracy, improve access, and deliver results for the residents of Miami-Dade County.
God bless Miami-Dade County, and God bless the United States of America.
