Miami-Dade County Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez recently welcomed students from Florida International University’s Government Fellows Program to the downtown Tax Collector’s Office for a meet-and-greet and behind-the-scenes tour, offering a firsthand look at how public service operates on a daily basis.

The visit provided students with the opportunity to learn about the office’s operations, engage directly with staff, and better understand the responsibilities involved in serving one of the largest and most diverse counties in the country. From licensing and registration services to customer service and community outreach, the experience highlighted the scope and impact of the work being done to serve residents.

“Opening our doors to students is one of the most important things we can do,” Fernandez said. “These are future leaders, and giving them a real understanding of public service helps inspire the next generation to get involved and make a difference.”

Throughout the visit, students were able to see how efficiency, innovation, and customer-focused service come together to meet the needs of the community. The interaction also allowed them to ask questions, gain insights, and connect their academic experience with real-world applications.

Fernandez emphasized that investing in young people is essential to building a stronger future. By creating opportunities for students to engage with government institutions, the Tax Collector’s Office helps foster a deeper understanding of civic responsibility and encourages careers in public service.

“I’m proud of the work our office does every day, but even more proud to share that experience with students who are passionate about making an impact,” Fernandez added. “If we can inspire even one person to pursue a path in public service, then we’re moving our community in the right direction.”

The visit reflects a continued commitment to education, mentorship, and community engagement — ensuring that the next generation is prepared, inspired, and ready to lead.
