Statement from Miami-Dade County Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez Supporting Resolution to End Small Property Tax Bills

Mar 09, 2026 5 mins read

As Miami-Dade County Tax Collector, I strongly support this resolution to stop mailing property tax bills when the amount due is $30 or less.

Taxpayers expect common sense from their government, and this proposal is exactly that. Right now, Miami-Dade sends more than 120,000 tax bills for very small amounts. In many cases, it actually costs more to print, mail, and process these bills than the amount we collect.

These notices include about 120,000 accounts, roughly 35,000 for real property and 84,000 for tangible personal property. Altogether, they add up to just over $64,000 in taxes.

Simply put, we are spending taxpayer dollars chasing pennies.

By stopping these very small bills, Miami-Dade County could save taxpayers an estimated $750,000 in printing, postage, administrative work, and other related costs. It would also reduce unnecessary calls, paperwork, and even legal costs that can come from trying to collect extremely small balances.

This change also helps protect residents. Families in Miami-Dade are already dealing with rising costs, and they shouldn’t be receiving confusing tax bills for $12 or $18 while the county spends more money processing them than the bill itself.

This proposal is about common sense, accountability, and respect for taxpayer dollars. Government should always be looking for ways to work smarter and spend responsibly.

I want to thank Commissioner Natalie Milian Orbis for sponsoring this measure and for her leadership in bringing forward a practical solution that benefits the residents of Miami-Dade County.
