Statement from Miami-Dade County Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez on Florida House Passage of HB 841 to Eliminate the Outdated Yellow Registration Decal
As your Miami-Dade County Tax Collector, I want to speak clearly about why eliminating the yellow decal is the right decision for our residents and for the State of Florida.
For decades drivers have been required to place a yellow sticker on their license plate after renewing their registration. But today that decal serves no real purpose. Law enforcement already verifies registration electronically in real time. They rely on the system, not on a sticker.
Keeping the decal only creates delays, confusion, and unnecessary bureaucracy. And let me say this clearly: I am not here to defend special interests. I am here to defend the people of Miami-Dade County. My job is simple: make government easier, faster, and more efficient for every resident who depends on our services.
That is why the passage of House Bill 841 by the Florida House of Representatives is such an important step forward. Eliminating the yellow decal will save the State of Florida more than 24 million dollars every year, and nearly 3 million dollars here in Miami-Dade County. That is real money that stays in our communities.
Drivers will still carry their registration and law enforcement will continue verifying it electronically. What we are eliminating is waste, not responsibility. This is about modernizing government, reducing bureaucracy, and putting people first.
I want to thank Representative Tom Fabricio for his leadership, as well as the members of the Florida House of Representatives who supported House Bill 841 and helped move this common-sense reform forward. I also want to thank our state leaders and law enforcement partners who understand that modernization is not optional, it is necessary.
Now the bill is in the hands of the Senate to do the right thing for the State of Florida and continue advancing this important reform.
God Bless Miami-Dade County, God Bless the State of Florida and God Bless the United States of America.
Dariel Fernandez
Tax Collector, Miami-Dade County
