Miami-Dade County Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez is informing residents of a GEICO insurance reporting issue identified by the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) that may affect certain Florida drivers.

According to FLHSMV, some GEICO insurance policies renewed between January 1 and April 13 were mistakenly transmitted to the state system as canceled. As a result, some drivers may receive suspension notices in error or see a pending suspension on their record despite maintaining valid insurance coverage.

“Our office understands how concerning this situation may be for residents,” said Tax Collector Fernandez. “We are working closely with FLHSMV to ensure accurate information is restored as quickly as possible, while also providing support to anyone who may be affected. Our goal is to make this process as clear and manageable as possible for our community.”

The Miami-Dade County Tax Collector’s Office is assisting residents who may have questions and encourages anyone who receives a notice or has concerns to take the following steps:

  • Policies may still be active despite being reported as closed
  • Verify driver license status using the DL Check service:https://mydmvportal.flhsmv.gov/home/en/publicweb/dlcheck/
  • If a license appears suspended or pending suspension, enter GEICO policy information online to help resolve the issue

Residents should be aware that many impacted policies may still be active, even if they were reported as closed. Taking a moment to verify your status can help prevent unnecessary complications.

FLHSMV is actively working to correct the information and restore accurate insurance records for all affected customers. Additional updates will be shared as more information becomes available.

The Miami-Dade County Tax Collector’s Office remains committed to supporting the community and ensuring residents have the guidance they need during this process.
